VOLLEY FOR THE CURE – 800 TEAMS VS. BREAST CANCER

Objective:
To educate about and increase awareness of breast cancer among high school students, faculty and staff and the school community, and secondarily to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Background:
Inspired by the pioneering event, VOLLEYBALL FOR THE CURE, in which the Cincinnati Sycamore and Loveland High School volleyball teams collaborated to convert a regular season varsity match into a huge event promoting breast cancer awareness and fundraising, this year’s event, VOLLEY FOR THE CURE, was created as a way to activate and inspire the entire interscholastic volleyball community. This event, which is sponsored by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association, the Susan G. Koman Foundation and Molten USA, Inc, is dedicated to all men and women who have been touched by breast cancer with the hope that this devastating disease will one day be cured.

Event Summary:
Each high school in Ohio that plays interscholastic volleyball is challenged to dedicate one home volleyball match to promote breast cancer education, awareness and fundraising.

WHEN: Anytime between September 20– October 11, 2008

WHERE: Home volleyball match between two or more schools

“HOW TO” DETAILS:
1. Working with your athletic administrator, select a date for the match and contact your opponent to discuss making this a collaborative effort. Please do this as soon as possible, preferably before the end of this school year.
2. Register for the OHSVCA coaches’ clinic which takes place on August 3-4, 2007 at Westerville Central High School. Click here for more information on the OHSVCA main webpage for clinic information. (www.ohsvca.org)
3. At the clinic, pick up your complimentary pink and white volleyball which is provided compliments of the OHSAA and OHSVCA corporate sponsor Molten USA.
4. If you cannot attend the clinic, arrange for a coach within your league or conference to pick up a ball for you.
5. Order the “team uniform” packet of pink uniform jerseys. Team uniform vendor information will be posted on the Volley for the Cure website when it becomes available. (Note: if we are able to get these donated, these instructions will change)
6. Encourage your contest officials to wear a pink polo for this contest. Vendor information for pink polos will be posted on the Volley for the Cure website when it becomes available.
7. Consider a discounted admission for anyone wearing pink to the match: ex: free to students; $2.00 discount for adults
8. Consider selling pink tee shirts as a fund raiser. Vendor information for fan shirts will be posted on the Volley for the Cure website when it becomes available. These are “hot” items. Sycamore and Loveland High Schools sold over 900 shirts in advance of last year’s event.
9. Consider other fund raising strategies including but not limited to:
a. Bake sales
b. Raffles
c. Split the pot or 50-50 contests
10. Register your event on the official web site for Volley for the Cure (Coming Soon!)

RESULTS:
In 2006, the attendance at the Sycamore High School vs. Loveland High School “Volleyball for the Cure” event was over 1,000 individuals, and over $4,000 were raised for breast cancer research. The enthusiasm generated from this single event has prompted our sponsorship for this year’s statewide project.
