
Division I
Sarah Garner of Westlake High School has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Sarah is the daughter of Dave and Donna Garner of Westlake , Ohio . Sarah receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Sarah is ranked 25 th of 286 with a four year grade point average of 4.499. She plans to attend Miami University or Indiana University to major in Business Management.
Sarah was a member of many school and community related organizations such as SADD, Spanish Club, and Pep Club. She is also a member of the National Honor Society , Student Council, Who's Who Among American High School Students and on the Honor Roll. She is involved with her church in the youth group, liturgical movement group and as a youth elder. She won first place for academic achievement in the Miss Ohio Junior Teen Pageant and won the Kiwanis Salute to Excellence.
Sarah was an all-conference selection and honorable mention all-district selection her senior year in volleyball. She was team captain and received the ICE award. Sarah was coached by Dan Berkheimer. Sarah also lettered in basketball and track. She was a conference placer in track and served as team captain in basketball.
Division II
Amanda Tedrick of Goshen High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Amanda is the daughter of Bill and Donna Tedrick of Loveland , Ohio . Amanda receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Amanda is ranked number one in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.0. She plans to attend Northern Kentucky University to major in Elementary Education.
Amanda was a first team all-conference selection for two years and team MVP for three years in volleyball. Amanda was coached by Lisa Smith. Amanda also lettered in basketball and track. Amanda was named all-conference and all-Southwest Ohio in basketball. She was a regional qualifier in the 800 m run and named all-conference for two years in track.
Division III
Katie Weininger of Mohawk High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Katie is the daughter of Joe and Juli Weininger of Sycamore, Ohio . Katie receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Katie is ranked fifth out of ninety-six in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.075. She plans to attend Ohio Northern University or Wittenberg .
Katie was a member of many school and community related organizations such as 4-H, Student Council, Spanish Club, and Ohio Reads. She is also a member of the National Honor Society , SADD, Show Choir, and Hoops for Heart and on the Honor Roll. Katie has performed in the school musical, served as senior and sophomore class president, UCC YF Treasurer, and attended the Wyandot County Leadership School . Katie received the National Machinery Award, was named student of the month, and is listed in Who's Who among American High School Students.
Katie was an all-conference selection all four years, all-district selection for three years, and team MVP for two years in volleyball. Her senior year she was named District 6 and MAL Player of the Year and was a first team all-state selection. Katie was coached by Eric Hoover. Katie also lettered in basketball and track. Katie was named all-conference and all-district and all- Northwest Ohio in basketball. She was a regional qualifier in the 4 x 400m relay and named all-conference in track.
Division IV
Kelsey Schaefer of Marion Local High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Kelsey is the daughter of Mark and Joan Schaefer of Maria Stein, Ohio . Kelsey receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Kelsey is ranked 21 st out of 64 in her class with a four year grade point average of 3.642. She plans to attend Marist College to major in Criminal Justice.
Kelsey was a member of many school and community related organizations such as serving as a Big Brothers / Big Sisters Volunteer, the Girls State Delegate and the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership group. She is also a member of the National Honor Society , SADD, FTA, FCCLA, Muse Machine, and Junior Scholars and is on the Honor Roll. Kelsey has served as Student Council President, is a member of her church group and serves as a church lector.
Kelsey was a first team all-conference selection and first team all-district selection for two years in volleyball. Her senior year she was named MAC Player of the Year and team MVP. She was a third team all-state selection her junior year and first team all-state selection as a senior. Kelsey was coached by Amy Kucharski. Kelsey also lettered in basketball and softball. Kelsey was named all-conference in basketball. She was a member of the 2002 State Championship basketball team and the 2004 State Semi-Final softball team.
The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship is awarded annually to a player from one of its coaching members' schools. The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.
Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship
Rachelle Rafailedes of Jackson High School has been awarded the Active Member's Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Rachelle is the daughter of John and Patricia Rafailedes of Massillon , Ohio . John Rafailedes is the head volleyball coach at Northwest High School and active OHSVCA member. He serves as an OHSVCA District Trustee. Rachelle receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.
Rachelle graduated with a four year grade point average of 4.150. She is ranked 29 th in her class of 438 students. Rachelle plans to major in dance and education in college.
Rachelle was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Student Council, French Club, Mighty Moose Book Club, and served on the Winter Formal Dance Committee. She was on the honor roll, was a HOBY finalist, in listed in Who's Who among American High School Students, and scored a “4” on an AP History exam. Rachelle was named Student of the Month at Jackson High School , Student of the Year for StarMaker Performing Arts Center and was dance captain for the Junior American Dance Company. She was invited to attend the Ohio State Summer Gifted Program. Rachelle has volunteered as a student director, dancer and choreographer as well as helping serve meals to the needy. Rachelle also played volleyball from seventh through ninth grades.
T. Joseph Russo of Elyria High School has been awarded the Active Member's Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2005. Joe is the son of Tom and Carol Russo of Elyria , Ohio . Carol Russo is the head volleyball coach at Elyria High School and active OHSVCA member. She serves as the OHSVCA President. Joe receives a $500 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.
Joe graduated with a four year grade point average of 4.150. He is ranked 16 th in his class of 388 students. Joe plans to attend Ashland University and major in Political Science and Secondary Education.
Joe was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Ohio Reads Program. He served as a GATE Fair volunteer and also as a peer mentor. Joe has been on the high honor roll for seven consecutive semesters. Joe was awarded the Presidential Scholarship from Ashland University .
Joe was a member of the varsity basketball and football teams. He was a three year letter winner in football and also served as team captain
The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Active Member’s Son / Daughter College Scholarships are awarded annually. The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.
