2004 Scholarship Winners

Division I

Ashley Davis of Anderson High School has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Ashley is the daughter of Jeff and Diana Davis of Cincinnati , Ohio .  Ashley receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Ashley is ranked 20th of 352 with a four year grade point average of 4.10.  She plans to attend Miami University or the Ohio State University to major in Communications.

    Ashley was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Mock Trial , Peer Counseling, Say No Advisor, Senior Homeroom Leader , Teacher's Aide and Aide for Multi-handicapped students , Camp Kern Counselor, Anderson Renaissance Committee Member and Yearbook / Newspaper staff. She is also a member of the National Honor Society , The Spanish Honor Society , the National Society of High School Scholars , and an Anderson Achiever, Who's Who among American High School Students and on the Honor Roll.

Ashley was a two time 1st team all-conference selection and honorable mention all-district selection her senior year in volleyball. She was team MVP and captain for two years. Her senior year she played in the District All-Star Match. Ashley was coached by Jeff Davis. Ashley also lettered in basketball and lacrosse.

Division II

Megan Taylor of Lakeview High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Megan is the daughter of Scott and Ginny Taylor of Cortland, Ohio.  Megan receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Megan is ranked 9th of 180 with a four year grade point average of 3.959.  She plans to major in Biology in college.    

Megan was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the Spanish Club , Student Council, Beta Club , Pep Club , Christian Youth Fellowship , and Chi Rho. She served as secretary for NHS, layout editor for the newspaper , assisted with youth volleyball camps and is a Bible School teacher. Megan was a National Ocean Science Bowl participant and on the honor roll since the 5 th grade.

Megan was a two time 1st team all-conference selection , 1st team all-district selection and Vindicator All Star. She was team captain for two years and MVP her senior year. In 2002 Megan was a 3rd Team All Ohio selection and in 2003 she was named District 1 Player of the Year as well as 1st Team All Ohio. Her senior year she played in the OHSVCA State All-Star Match. Megan was coached by Scott Taylor. 

Megan also lettered in track where she received the Most Improved Runner Award in 2002.

Division III

Kara Hemmelgarn of Versailles High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Kara is the daughter of David and Deborah Hemmelgarn of Versailles , Ohio .  Kara receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Kara is ranked 1st of 103 with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  She plans to attend the University of Dayton or Ohio Northern University to major in Elementary Education.

    Kara was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the French Club , College Club , SADD, Future Teachers of America and St. Louis CYO. She is Vice President of Student Council and Vice President of the National Honor Society. Kara has won awards for being the top student and achievement awards in chemistry and environmental science. She was also on the Homecoming Court .

In 2002, Kara was a 2nd team all-conference selection , 1st team all-district selection , and Honorable Mention All State selection. In 2003, Kara was a 1st team all-conference selection , 1st team all-district selection , 3rd team All State selection , and was named Darke County Fall Female Athlete of the Year. Kara was a co-captain of her team which was the State Runner-up in volleyball. She holds numerous school records in volleyball. Kara was coached by Jeremy Riley. 

Kara also lettered in basketball were she served as team captain her senior year.

Division IV

Elizabeth Homerosky of South Webster High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Elizabeth is the daughter of Frank and Mary Homerosky of Oak Hill , Ohio .  Elizabeth receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Elizabeth is ranked 1st of 60 with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  She plans to attend The Ohio State University to major in Animal Science.

    Elizabeth was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the National Honor Society , Concert Band , Pep Band , Bible Club , Key Club , Renaissance Board , Stage Manager , Prom Committee , Yearbook Staff , and Principal's Leadership Committee. She has served in various roles with her church ministry and 4H.

Elizabeth has received many awards including the 3 year perfect attendance award, 4 years All A Honor Roll , Class Valedictorian, Presidential Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement , HOBY ambassador , Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, and National Honor Roll. Elizabeth has won many art competitions , essay contests , sewing contests (including receiving the Scioto County 's Most Promising Young Seamstress Award) and beef competitions (including Showman of Showman Beef Division County Fair Winner).

Elizabeth was a four year varsity letter winner for volleyball. She has been a co-captain for two years and received the Coach's Award two years. Elizabeth was coached by Sandra Smith. 

Elizabeth also lettered in track her freshman and sophomore years and lettered in softball her junior year.

The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship is awarded annually to a player from one of its coaching members' schools.  The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.

Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship

Ben Stewart of Batavia High School has been awarded the Active Member's Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Ben is the son of Ed and Stephanie Stewart of Batavia, Ohio.  Ed Stewart is the head volleyball coach at Fayetteville High School and active OHSVCA member for over 20 years. Ben receives a $500 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments.  

Ben will graduate in the top third of his class with a four year grade point average of 3.185.  He plans to major in Secondary Education in college.

Ben was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Student Council, Spanish club, elementary school tutor, and volunteer leader in building an elementary playground. He was the Junior Class Treasurer and Senior Class President. Ben was voted as the student with the Most School Spirit in 2002 and 2003 and Best Personality in 2003-04.

Ben was a four year letter winner in both football and track. He played baseball, basketball and wrestled for one year. Ben received the Football Coach's Award and Bulldog Award in 2002 and 2003. He is a two year 1st Team All-League selection and was named All-District his senior year. He was also chosen as the WCPO TV Student of the Week.

Karli Townsend of Malvern High School has been awarded the Active Member's Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2004.  Karli is the daughter of Jim and Denise Townsend of Malvern, Ohio.  Denise Townsend is the head volleyball coach at Malvern High School and active OHSVCA member for over 17 years. Karli receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.  

Karli graduated first in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.0.  She plans to attend Baldwin-Wallace College to major in Business Management.

Karli was a member of many school and community related organizations such as NHS, student council, Prom and Homecoming Committee, and her Church Youth Group. Karli received the Presidential Award, University of Rochester Humanities and Social Sciences Award, and was a Wendy's Heisman Nominee. She received many departmental awards in French, Art, English, and Biology.

Karli was a four year letter winner in volleyball. She has been named second team All-IVC her sophomore year and 1st Team All-IVC her junior and senior years. She was named 1st Team All District 5 for three years and was named District 5 Player of the Year her senior year.

Karli has lettered in basketball and track since her freshman year. She has been named All IVC in basketball and track as well as All District 5 in track.

The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Active Member’s Son / Daughter College Scholarships are awarded annually.  The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.
