2003 Scholarship Winners

Division I

Katie Flower of Twinsburg High School has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Katie is the daughter of Patricia Matune and Jim Flower, of Twinsburg, Ohio.  Katie receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Katie graduated in the top 10% in her class with a four year grade point average of 3.83.  She plans to attend Gannon University to major in Pre-Medicine / Physicians Assistant.

Katie was a member of many school and community related organizations such as S.A.D.D., Homecoming Committee and Prom Committee.  Katie was president of NHS, won the Chrysler Award, and served as a Church Youth Group Leader.

Katie was a three time all-conference and all-district selection in volleyball. She was named to the Akron Beacon Journal and Cleveland Plain Dealer All-Star teams.  Her senior year she was named MVP of the conference and played in the OHSVCA State All-Star Match.  Katie was coached by John Matune. 

Katie also lettered in basketball and track.  In basketball she was a two time all-conference player, as well as being named to the all-district and Tri-County all-star teams.

Division II

Victoria Kasten of Norwalk High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Victoria is the daughter of James and Susan Kasten of Norwalk, Ohio.  Victoria receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Victoria graduated first in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.703.  She plans to attend Brown University to major in Pre-Law / Business.

Victoria was a member of many school and community related organizations such as DARE, SHADOW Environmental Club, Foreign Language Club, Junior Project Leadership Planning Committee, and Jostens Leadership Conference Representative.  Victoria was named Valedictorian, Senior of the Year, French Student of the Year, OHSAA Representative for the National Making a Difference Leadership Conference, and was inducted into the Hall of Excellence.

Victoria was a three time letter winner, and a two time all-conference and all-district selection in volleyball. She led her team to a State Final Four berth in 2002.  Her senior year she was named District VI Player of the Year and First Team All-Ohio.  Victoria was coached by Grace Hutchinson.

Victoria also lettered in basketball and track.  Victoria played club volleyball for the North Shore Volleyball Club and was a People to People Sports Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand.

Division III

Tealle Hunkus of Girard High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Tealle is the daughter of David and Holly Hunkus of Girard, Ohio.  Tealle receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Tealle graduated ninth in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.290.  She plans to attend Duke University.

Tealle was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the Spanish Club and Key Club.  Tealle was also a member of the Beta Club, earned the Award of Merit and graduated with honors.

Tealle was a three time First Team All-Conference selection in volleyball and two time conference Player of the Year. Her junior and senior years she was named and First Team All-Ohio.  In the Aug / Sept 2002 issue of Student Sports Magazine she was named as the 36th strongest volleyball player in the nation.  Tealle was coached by Phil Walters. 

Tealle also lettered in basketball and track.  Tealle was a two time All-Conference, All-County and Special Mention All-State selection in basketball.  She was the conference champion and regional qualifier in the high jump and long jump in 2001.

Division IV

Lindsey Clark of Malvern High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Lindsey is the daughter of Eddie and Sudie Clark of Malvern, Ohio.  Lindsey receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Lindsey graduated first in her class with a four year grade point average of 4. 0.  She plans to attend either Xavier or Walsh University to major in Pre-Medicine.

Lindsey was a member of many school and community related organizations such as NHS (senior president), FCA, student council rep, yearbook editor, office aide and member of the First Christian Church of Malvern.  Lindsey was class secretary for one year and served as class president for three years.  She was the American Legion Government Essay winner, attended the HOBY Leadership Conference and was named a Mount Union Scholar.

Lindsey was a three year letter winner in volleyball and was named MVP by her team.  She was an All-Conference and All-District selection in volleyball.  Lindsey was coached by James Townsend. 

Lindsey also lettered in basketball and softball.  Lindsey was an All-Conference selection in basketball. She represented Sport USA Ohio at a volleyball tournament in Hawaii.


Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship

Kristin Habegger of Clay High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Kristin is the daughter of Dave and Diane Habegger of Oregon, Ohio.  Dave Habegger was the head volleyball coach at Clay High School and active OHSVCA member.  He serves as an OHSVCA District Trustee.  Kristin receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Kristin graduated with a four year grade point average of 3.784.  She plans to attend Baldwin-Wallace College to major in Graphic Design.

Kristin was a member of many school and community related organizations such as NHS, STRIVE, Math Club, Foreign Language Club, Chess Club and the Humanities Program.  She was on the honor roll for four years. 

Kristin is a two time All-League and All-District selection.  Her senior year she was named league Player of the Year as well as Third Team All-Ohio.  Kristin was also a letter winner in basketball.

 

Megan Schenk of Lima Central Catholic High School has been awarded the Active Member’s Son / Daughter Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2003.  Megan is the daughter of Kevin and Debra Schenk of Lima, Ohio.  Debra Schenk was the head volleyball coach at Lima Central Catholic High School and active OHSVCA member. Megan receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments.

Megan graduated fifth in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.219.  She plans to attend the Ohio State University to major in Pre-Law.

Megan was a member of many school and community related organizations such as NHS, student government, LCC International Club and LACCA volunteer. She volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and attended the National Youth Leadership Convention. Megan was on the honor roll and named Outstanding Student for four years. She was named Academic All-American. Megan was the Outstanding 4-H Project Winner at the Allen County Fair and received the LCC Senior Scholastic Leadership Award. Megan also received the State Board of Education Award of Merit and the President’s Award for Educational Excellence.

Megan was a two year letter winner in volleyball. She was team captain and selected to the District VIII All-Star team. She led her team in digs and had the highest serving percentage. Megan was a two year varsity swimmer and was a district qualifier. In softball she was a three year letter winner and team captain. In 2003 Megan received Lima Central Catholic’s Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award.

The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Active Member’s Son / Daughter College Scholarships are awarded annually.  The student-athlete must be in good academic standing with plans to continue her education after high school.
