2001 Scholarship Winners

Division I

Ashley Richmond of Milford High School has been awarded the Division I Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2001. Ashley is the daughter of Greg and Sandy Richmond of Milford, Ohio. Ashley receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Ashley graduated 1st in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.0. She plans to attend the Otterbein College or Ohio Northern University to major in Criminal Justice/Pre-Law.

Ashley was coached by Ernie House. Ashley was a member of many school and community related organizations such as the Quest Advisor, volunteer for the Cincinnati Deaf Institute, Church Pantry Basket, SADD, PTSA and Just Say No Teen Spokesperson. Ashley was an NHS member and Buckeye Girls' State. Ashley received many volleyball honors including Second Team All-GMC, team captain and scholar athlete medalist. Ashley participated in track and basketball.

Division II

Carrie Hughes of Purcell Marian High School has been awarded the Division II Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2001. Carrie is the daughter of Judy Hughes of Cincinnati, Ohio. Carrie receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Carrie graduated third in her class with a four year grade point average of 4.0. She plans to major in Social Work / Psychology.

Carrie was coached by Angel Miller-El. Carrie was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Peer Ministry, SAA, SADD, Latin Club, Volunteer for the American Cancer Society, grade school volleyball coach and a member of the Loss of a Loved One support group. Carrie was an NHS member, on the Dean's List and received awards for excellence in academic achievement for three years in Latin. Carrie received many volleyball honors including team captain and was the recipient of the Coach's Award. Carrie also participated in cheerleading.

Division III

Courtney Tisher of Rittman High School has been awarded the Division III Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2001. Courtney is the daughter of Ronald and Renee Tisher of Rittman, Ohio. Courtney receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Courtney graduated first in her class of 105 with a four year grade point average of 4.0. She plans to major in Middle Childhood Education at Bluffton College.

Courtney was coached by Neal Weaver. Courtney was a member of many school and community related organizations such as vice president of NHS, class treasurer, as well as being a member of the yearbook and pep club. Courtney was named valedictorian, Daily Record Teen of the Month, Akron Beacon Journal Student of the Week, and Beacon Journal Bronze Star winner. Courtney received many volleyball honors including team MVP, first team all-league (3 years), first team all-district (two years) and was named league MVP her senior year. Courtney was an all-league, three year letter winner in basketball and softball.

Division IV

Kelly Ruffer of Stryker High School has been awarded the Division IV Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association College Scholarship for 2001. Kelly is the daughter of Ed and Julie Ruffer of Stryker, Ohio. Kelly receives a $500 award for her academic and athletic accomplishments. Kelly graduated second in her class of 50 with a four year grade point average of 3.98. She plans to attend Miami University.

Kelly was coached by Kirsten Meyer. Kelly was a member of many school and community related organizations such as band, SIBBS, DARE and Campus Life. Kelly was a member of the honor roll and was awarded outstanding academic achievement in Algebra 2, Anatomy, Biology and Global Studies. Kelly received many volleyball honors including all-league (3 years) and the scholar athlete award. Kelly was a letter winner in basketball and softball.

Active Member's Son / Daughter Scholarship

Ryan Lewis of Springfield High School has been awarded the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Active Member's Son / Daughter College Scholarship for 2001. Ryan is the son of Gayle Eversole and Sonny Lewis of Holland, Ohio. Ryan receives a $500 award for his academic and athletic accomplishments. Ryan graduated 31st in his class of 225 with a four year grade point average of 3.642. He plans to attend Baldwin Wallace as a business major.

Ryan was a member of many school and community related organizations such as Young Life, Spanish Club, school newspaper, church food drive, as well as coaching and volunteer reading at elementary schools. Ryan was a member NHS, Varsity "S", and received an academic award of merit. Ryan was a four year letter winner for the volleyball team and was twice named league MVP. Ryan was a letter winner in wrestling and football and was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year at his high school.
