Memo from Deborah Moore, OHSAA
FROM: Deborah B. Moore, Associate Commissioner
RE: New Volleyball Uniform Rules Effective August 2016
The purpose of this memo is to remind you of the new NFHS volleyball uniform rules which will go into effect for the 2016-17 volleyball season. The NFHS adopted this change in 2012 allowing four years for schools to make the transition. The OHSAA has been advising coaches about these changes in each of the mandatory rules meetings the past four years and included the updates in the uniform document which is posted online for our member schools here: http://www.ohsaa.org/members/uniform.htm
Because the purchase of uniforms is an expensive endeavor, we want to ensure that you have a copy of the new rule available so that you can check to make sure that all high school volleyball uniforms are compliant as we begin the 2016 season. Please note that if you use a libero, either the libero or her teammates or BOTH, shall be attired in a solid colored uniform jersey that is clearly contrasting to the predominant color (approximately half) of the teammates’ jersey. Here is the exact text of the rule as taken from the NFHS rules book and the Volleyball Preseason Manual.
Beginning in July 2016, WHICH MEANS NEXT YEAR IN THE 2016 SEASON, the libero shall wear a uniform top that is immediately recognized from all angles as being in clear contrast to and distinct from the other members of the team. The libero and/or her teammates shall wear a solid-colored uniform top. Regarding the solid-colored top:
a. The solid color uniform top shall clearly contrast from the predominant color(s) of the teammates’ uniform top. Predominant color(s) is the color(s) appearing on approximately half of the uniform.
b. Sleeves shall be the same color as the body of the uniform top.
c. Piping/trim not exceeding one inch (1”) in total at its widest point may be placed along the seams and maybe a different color(s) than the uniform top.
d. Lettering and colors may be a different color(s) than the uniform top.
e. A single school name, mascot and/or player’s name may be placed on the body of the uniform top, but shall not disrupt the integrity of the solid-colored uniform top. Designs are not permitted. A single mascot reference and/or school name may be placed on the sleeve(s), not to exceed 4 by 4 inches or 3 by 5 inches.
f. Numbers shall be a contrasting color to the uniform top and meet all other specifications in Rule 4-2-4.
Also, allow me to remind you that the volleyball numbers shall be a solid color and placed on the upper front and back of the uniform top. Upper front means placed so the top of the number is no more than 5 inches below the bottom edge of any neckline ribbing, placket or seams on the top.
Please feel free to contact Director of Development, Diane Plas, or me if you have any questions.
